Data Storage Reliability

Erasure Codes for Data Storage Reliability

With the increasing number of devices in large data storage systems the
number of failures increases as well. Therefore data needs to be stored
redundantly across a number of devices. While replication is simple it
consumes a multiple of the storage space of the original data file size.
More sophisticated MDS erasure codes e.g. Reed-Solomon codes, add only a
fraction of the original file size as redundancy with the same
reliability guarantees as replication.

Our research concentrates on topics affected by the integration of
erasure codes into wide area storage systems like reliability modelling,
acceleration of coding algorithms and data access efficiency.
