Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum accelerates high performance Network with Cisco
The company Cisco has published a report titled "Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum speeds up data storage transfer for high-performance computers with the Cisco Nexus 5020".
At the end of the year 2008 switches of type Nexus 5020 werde purchased and installed by the ZIB. The aim was to migrate our IP-net in the area of server from 1 Gb/s to a high performance 10 Gb/s network.
These switches are characterized by the feature that their ports allow to connect traditional 10 Gb/s as well as FCoE (Fibre Channel over Ethernet). At the same time the switches have FC (Fibre Channel) ports for the connection to a SAN (Storage Area Network).
In interaction with FCoE host bus adapter in a server this feature allows to transmit IP and FC at the same time over one 10 Gb/s ethernet connection.
In this way the worlds of data and storage networks are converged.
