Anatomy based simulation of facial expressions
A convincing simulation of facial expressions is common practice in art and animation. However, a realistic simulation of individual facial expressions is not only based on an artist's skills but also on different anatomical aspects, like muscle origins and insertions, soft tissue thickness and composition, as well as on the structure of underlying bone. Tomographic data (CT, MRI) enable us to accurately reconstruct individual heads. Knowing the individual anatomy we can simulate contractions of single muscles or muscle groups, thus being able to study individual facial expressions.
Our simulation approach is based on a discretized volume of facial soft tissue with embedded muscles and a biomechanical tissue model. Muscle activities lead to tissue deformations, that can be simulated by numerically solving partial differential equations of three-dimensional elasticity on the tissue grid via a Finite-Element approach.
