Erdős and Einstein Numbers


This entry is actually misplaced… While an Erdős or Einstein number of 1 or 2 is surely a distinction, numbers in the range of [3...5] should be considered as an honor that came to a researcher by lucky coincidences in 4D space-time. Nevertheless, the Erdős number is the only bibliometric parameter mathematicians really care about, as shown in this cartoon. (I could not observe that the same applies to physicists with respect to the Einstein number; they seem to be more resistant to vanities of this kind.)

Mentioning such numbers can also be seen as an exerted attempt to establish a connection between an ingenious world-class scientist and a mediocre researcher :-) . Therefore, if you are still interested in that remote aspect of a researcher’s life, continue reading…
