WA 39/17

The Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) is a non-university research institute under public law of the state of Berlin. Together with its partners from academia and industry, ZIB contributes to the solution of highly complex problems in science, technology, environment and society by developing mathematical models and efficient algorithms. The department of Mathematical Optimization is offering a position within the research group „Energy Network Optimization“:

research position (100%)
reference Code: WA
pay grade E14 TV-L Berlin.

The position is offered at the earliest possible date for two years.

 Work description:

The Zuse Institute Berlin works in international cooperation with universities and industrial partners on solutions of planning problems beyond the frontier of current feasibility. This position is part of the project Plan4RES which is supported by the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 program. Plan4RES aims at developing an end-to-end planning tool to increase the share of renewable energy into the European Energy system without compromising on system reliability.

In this position, you will be responsible for the integration of the European gas network infrastructure and its connection to energy systems via power-to-gas technologies in the Plan4RES tool. This includes modelling, implementation, documentation, and communication with project partners. You will build on existing state-of-the-art code to determine gas network capacities and adapt and extend it for problems of European scale. Together with researchers in the team and with the partners you will work on the entire chain from solution concepts to the implementation of mathematical models and solution algorithms in high-quality software. You will publish your results in scientific journals, present them to the project partners and at national and international scientific conferences.

We offer a friendly work atmosphere, excellent equipment and an ambitious professional environment. Embedded in the rich mathematical research landscape of Berlin, ZIB offers career perspectives on every stage including further qualification options and a strong support of research on award winning standards with high international visibility. Our team offers an attractive initial training process to train new team members in the knowledge and skills, you need for the success in our institute and your career.
