The Parallel and Distributed Computing division has two departments: Distributed Algorithms and Supercomputing and Datacenter Infrastructure. The department Distributed Algorithms and Supercomputing performs research and provides scientific services for parallel and distributed computing. We operate the Northern German Supercomputer HLRN and provide scientific consulting for researchers in various application domains. Our research emphasizes on scalable, fault-tolerant algorithms for distributed systems, especially for the management and analysis of big data. The datacenter infrastructure department is responsible for the planning, procurement, installation, and maintenance of the information and communication technology at ZIB. This includes computers, servers, networks, periphery, web- and mail-services, telephone and an electronic lab. The department also runs the headquarters of the Berlin metropolitan area network BRAIN and high-end data facilities for long-term data storage.
