Service Center Digitization Berlin
Cultural Heritage Institutions are nowadays faced with the challenge not only to administer, preserve and maintain digital cultural assets, but also make them available to the public on a permanent basis. This poses enormous challenges on cultural heritage and memory institutions as well as research institutes, as for them, it is mostly an area in which particularly small and medium sized institutions have no or only little experience. digiS networks the individual projects of the support programme, provides consulting services for the implementation of digitization and aims at enabling institutions to play an active role in their digital practice. Here, the whole digitization lifecycle is considered as an extensive process, starting with data management as well as rule-based enrichment and processing of data, the purely technical implementation of digitization, the persistent safeguarding of long-term availability including corresponding presentation via the internet.
With the establishment of digiS in 2012, the state of Berlin pioneers in coordinating state-wide digitization projects of cultural heritage institutions. The projects supported represent a cross-section of the cultural landscape in Berlin. In total, 24 projects in 14 institutions have been supported in digitizing more than 500.000 objects and 100.000 of audio-visual material.
