With the growing complexity and size of computer systems, fault-tolerance and scalability are becoming crucial.

Both aspects are equally important for distributed systems and high-performance computers. For distributed systems, ZIB will mainly addreess the central question how to achieve consistency in distributed file systems and key-value stores. For high-performance computers, such as future exascale computers with millions of processor cores, the design of applications and runtime systems is of key interest in ZIB.
