The (time-dependent) continuum mechanics of dislocations at unrestricted geometric and material nonlinearity will be discussed. The theory will be illustrated with two results pertaining to dislocation pattern formation observed in experiments: i) dislocation cell formation in a time-dependent context describing collective mesoscale behavior ii) the phenomenon of polygonization involving dislocation walls, in a static context. Contact will be made with existing mathematical results. This is joint work with Rajat Arora.
