Job description: 

The position offered is the position of the head of a BIFOLD junior research group at ZIB. BIFOLD is a cross-institutional and interdisciplinary competence center where scientists want to research and develop new approaches in the fields of Big Data, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. 

We are looking for a candidate with extensive experience and independent research results in the field of machine learning, especially in the area of method development for applications in the materials or life sciences. He or she must be able to demonstrate internationally visible theoretical research results and applications to real-world complex systems and to build bridges to possible fields of application. He or she has experience in the design, acquisition and/or implementation of third-party funded projects. 

Your tasks: 

  • Very difficult research tasks in the whole area described above, especially with regard to the development of machine learning methods to combine data-driven and model-oriented approaches 
  • Establishment and management of an interdisciplinary research team 
  • Acquisition and implementation of third-party funded projects 
  • Initiation and implementation of application projects, especially in the field of materials or life sciences 
  • Publication of results in peer-reviewed journals 

Your profile: 

  • Doctorate in mathematics, computer science or related disciplines 
  • Relevant experience in all the above areas 
  • Proven experience in the acquisition and implementation of projects third-party funded projects 
  • Applicants are expected to be highly motivated, creative, independent and open to interdisciplinary cooperation 
  • Very good written and spoken English

Although the position is released full-time, a part-time agreement is also possible.
