for the excellence cluster MATH+ project “The Evolution of Ancient Egyptian - Quantitative and Non-Quantitative Mathematical Linguistics” from January 1st, 2021 until December 31st, 2022 (project end). 

Background 

Evidence of changes in historical processes in ancient cultures can be found in textual sources. It can be found not only in the content of these texts, but also in their linguistic change. Mathematics can reveal these changes. Research questions from linguistics and cultural history can be transformed into algebraic questions. 

Job description 

The MATH+ funded project "The Evolution of Ancient Egyptian - Quantitative and Non-Quantitative Mathematical Linguistics" includes the following topics: 

  • Supporting the clustering of ancient Egyptian texts 
  • Developing a mathematical theory for the (algebraic) formalization of comparative text analysis or of clustering of general texts 
  • Delimitation of the theory from existing approaches and concepts of computer-based linguistics 

Requirement 

A doctoral degree / PhD in Mathematics (or in a similar suitable research field) 

Your profile 

  • Good knowledge of algebra (especially commutative algebra, or knowledge of Boolean rings) 
  • Programming skills (e.g. in Python, Matlab, or similar) 
  • Possible knowledge in the field of spectral clustering, 
  • Interests in close cooperation with researchers of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities in the study of linguistic and philological questions related to ancient Egyptian texts 
  • Very good English language skills
