Annemarie Lang, Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and Rainald Ehrig, ZIB, win the award for the research on replacement and alternative methods to reduce animal testing provided by the state of Berlin.
Every second year the Senate Department for Health, the Environment and Consumer Protection, the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (LAGeSo), and the association of the research-based pharmaceutical companies in Germany award researchers whose work can demonstrably contribute to the reduction or complete replacement of animal experiments. The prize is endowed with 40.000,- Euro and is this year split between two research groups. Annemarie Lang and Rainald Ehrig win the award for the development of in vitro and in silico models for cellular and matrix-related changes during osteoarthritis. They started a close collaboration between Charité and ZIB that aims for complete models to mimic arthritic joints in vitro and in silico. The award ceremony took place on December 11, 2019 in the Red Town Hall.
