This vacancy needs to be filled at the earliest possible date - preferably 1 April 2021 and is a fixed-term contract (due to end of project) until 31 December 2021.
Background
The position is part of the research project “Data-driven Modeling of the Romanization Process of Northern Africa” of the excellence cluster MATH+ at the ZIB. The main goals of this project are the development of network-based models for describing cultural spreading processes in the ancient world in application to the Romanization of Northern Africa, as well as the process inference from archaeological data.
Job description
- Supporting the development of data-based network models for studying Romanization process of Northern Africa
- Validation of models and algorithms based on archaeological data
- Publication of results in peer-reviewed journals
The research will be carried out in close collaboration with the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) and Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) and aims at shedding light on the mechanisms underlying cultural transformation processes. The successful candidate shall be included in a larger research team based at ZIB, FUB, and DAI.
Requirements
- A doctoral degree / PhD in Archaeology
- Experience in some or all of the following areas: Romanization of the ancient world, computational archaeology, statistics of spatio-temporal archaeological data (e.g. point pattern analysis), network models for studying archaeological processes
- Experience in the use of GIS (Geographic Information System), R
- Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration
- Very good English language skills
