The Joint Lab BerOSE is a laboratory shared by Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie GmbH (HZB), Freie Universität Berlin (FU) and Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB). BerOSE stands for "Berlin Joint Lab for Optical Simulations for Energy Research". The office of the Joint Lab is located at ZIB with a close contact to the research group Computational Nanooptics, where algorithmic and software development is carried out.

The research of Joint Lab BerOSE aims to advance materials for photocatalysis, photovoltaics and photonics, with textures on nanometer scales. To do this, we perform rigorous 3D simulations for functional systems and components. In this endeavour, we profit from the combination of the backgrounds of the various partner institutions in experimental, theoretical and computational research.

The Third European Workshop on Optics for Solar Energy (formerly “European Workshop Nanophotonics for Solar Energy”) has been organized by BerOSE researchers and held on October 5-6, 2021, as part of Photonic Days Berlin Brandenburg 2021. Trends and developments in the field of optics and nanophotonics for solar energy conversion devices have been discussed. The workshop was organized as a hybrid event where some speakers presented their research on site in Berlin, and others online.

The online seminar on Optics for Solar Energy, held on October 05, 2020, has reviewed current trends and recent developments in the field of optics and nanophotonics for solar energy conversion devices. It covered various topics such as (nano-)optical light management for single-junction and tandem solar cells and solar fuel devices, optical modelling of mono- and bifacial solar modules and energy yield calculations. Talks have been presented by Benedikt Bläsi (FHI ISE, Germany), Sonya Calnan (HZB, Germany), Eugene Katz (BGU, Israel), Albert Polman (AMOLF, The Netherlands), Hitoshi Sai (AIST, Japan), Emily Warren (NREL, USA).

BerOSE Workshop 2018

In collaboration with HZB, a European Workshop on Nanophotonics for Solar Energy: Current Trends and Future Challenges has been held on November 25/26, 2015. Presentations have been given by speakers from the following institutions: Univ. of York (UK), Univ. of Ljubljana (SLO), Ecole Centrale de Lyon (F), Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (D), TU Delft (NL), IMEC (BE), Univ. of Jena (D), AMOLF (NL), EPFL (CH), FZ Jülich (D), Fraunhofer ISE (D), KIT (D), Zuse Institute Berlin (D) (HZB press release).

BerOSE Workshop 2015

The official opening of Joint Lab BerOSE has taken place on February 17, 2015 at ZIB, with several dedicated sessions at the 8th Annual Meeting Photonic Devices (HZB press release).
