A team of international researchers has investigated dynamic processes leading to capacity degradation at the electrodes in lithium batteries using tomographic techniques. Of particular importance for this study was the application of an algorithm developed at ZIB for the virtual unrolling of papyri scrolls. In the recent study, which was published in Nature Communications, the virtual unrolling algorithm was applied to unwind the electrodes from the 3-dimensional images. This allowed the quantitative analysis of degradation processes in batteries which otherwise would not have been possible.
