On April 27th, 2023, the Zuse Institute successfully participated in Girls' Day! Over 40 girls between the ages of 10 and 14 became enthusiastic about the world of mathematics and computer science and saw how exciting and interesting these subjects are. With three creative workshops, ZIB offered participants the opportunity to deepen their interests and expand their knowledge.
Our workshops at ZIB this year included:
- "Discover the secrets of the Koch curve - A creative workshop for aspiring mathematicians" by Jannis Halbey,
- "Mathematicians on the trail of chance" (with a visit to the supercomputer) by Nathalie Unger and Ariane Ernst,
- "she.codes: Programming with Calliope mini" organized by Annika Buchholz, supported by the she.codes team and Martin Hanik.
The workshops lasted about three hours each and also gave participants insights into the science and work at ZIB. All school levels from 5th to 8th grade and girls aged 10-14 participated. The girls were enthusiastic and were able to take home new knowledge and experiences. We were impressed by the ideas and enthusiasm of the girls and hope that they will continue to enjoy mathematics and programming in the future.
For Girls' Day 2023, ZIB worked with the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science at FU Berlin as well as the MINToring office. Together, we organized the introductory event for all workshops to give participants an insight into the diverse possibilities of mathematics and computer science. ZIB and FU Berlin are already looking forward to the next Girls' Day on April 25th next year.
