The Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) is a non-university research institute under public law of the state of Berlin. ZIB conducts research and development in the field of information technology, applied mathematics, and computer science focusing on modeling, simulation and optimization with scientific cooperation partners from academia and industry.

The division Mathematics for Life and Materials Sciences is offering within the BMBF Research Network on Musculoskeletal Diseases a

Research position – PhD Student (f/m)
Pay grade E 13 TV-L Berlin (75%)
Reference code: WA 31/15

The position will be a fixed-term contract for two years with the option to be extended.

Research Topic

For the individual simulation and prediction of mechanical stresses in articular cartilage, a dynamical multibody model of the lower extremities has to be coupled to a finite element model of quasistatic contact dynamics of the knee. This involves both numerical analysis and development of appropriate coupling conditions and the implementation of a robust code that can be applied to larger patient cohorts. Individual loading shall be identified from gait measurement data.

Requirements

  • master or diploma in mathematics, computer science or physics
  • profound knowledge of numerical mathematics, including finite elements and optimization
  • experience in object oriented software development, preferably in C++
  • interest in mechanical and medical topics
  • willingness to engage in interdisciplinary work
  • very good communication skills in English

The successful candidate will work in an inspiring and pleasant environment and will receive adequate professional support. We offer a challenging scientific task, a high degree of autonomy and state-of-the-art technical infrastructure.
