The Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) is a non-university research institute under public law of the state of Berlin. The division "Mathematics for Life and Materials Sciences" is offering a

Research position (f/m)
Reference code WA 11 /16
Pay grade E 13 / E 14 (depending on qualification) TV-L Berlin

in the research group “Bioinformatics in Medicine” of the department Visual Data Analysis. The position is offered at the earliest possible date and will be a fixed-term contract for 2 years.

Tasks

The goal of the BMBF-funded project “Fluoromath” is the development of mathematical methods for the analysis of medical time-series image data with a focus on diagnosis (classification) and therapy planning for joint inflammation (e.g. arthritis) in hands. Using available data from our industry partner the two main tasks are the design of (1) methods for feature extraction from the given image data and (2) methods for solving L0/L1 optimization problems that allow finding sparse classifiers.

Primary tasks include:

  • Integration of measured anatomical and available clinical data into a common database
  • Feature extraction from the integrated data, e.g. based on segmentation and registration using state-of-the art approaches, such as shape statistics
  • Development and implementation of optimization algorithms suited for identification of sparse classifiers
  • Validation of the results in a bio-medical context

The applicant is expected to collaborate closely with the cooperation partners from industry and Freie Universität Berlin.

We expect creativity and a high degree of commitment in solving problems. We offer a friendly working atmosphere, excellent equipment and a challenging professional environment. We offer scientists in all career stages opportunities for further qualification and support and expect research on top level with international visibility.

Requirements

  • University degree in computer science, mathematics, bioinformatics or related disciplines
  • Good software development skills (Java, C++ or a comparable language)
  • Experience in some or all of the following areas is essential: image analysis, image registration, signal processing, machine learning, sparsity-based methods, compressed sensing
  • Applicants are expected to be highly motivated, self-reliant, and able to collaborate and work with top-level scientists in neurobiology
  • Good command of written and spoken English is essential

The candidature of women is encouraged. Since women are underrepresented in information technology, ZIB is trying to increase the proportion of women in this research area.

Persons with disabilities will be given preference when equally qualified.
