We are very pleased to announce that on 21 June 2018 the German Federal Cultural Foundation (Kulturstiftung des Bundes) agreed on a new resolution to support the first German open cultural data hackathon Coding da Vinci! As part of the Program “Kultur digital” Coding da Vinci will be granted funding of 1,2 million Euros from 2019 to 2022.
Coding da Vinci was founded in Berlin in 2014 as a joint project by the Research and Competence Center Digitalization (digiS), Wikimedia Germany, the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (DDB) and the Open Knowledge Foundation Germany. The event brings cultural heritage institutions together with the hacker and designer community to develop ideas and prototypes for the cultural sector and for the public such as apps, websites or games. In the past couple of years there has been a substantial increase of interest in this initiative. The event has twice taken place in Berlin and thereafter travelled to different regions of Germany, e.g. to Hamburg titled Coding da Vici North (2016) and to Leipzig as Coding da Vinci East (2018). Other upcoming events are Coding da Vinci Rhein-Main (2018) and Coding da Vinci South (2019).
Thanks to the German Federal Cultural Foundation’s support, the cultural data hackathon shall take place eight times a year in changing locations nationwide. A regional office will be established in Frankfurt/Main at the Deutschen Digitalen Bibliothek (DDB) / Deutsche Nationalbibliothek to coordinate these events.
In particular, the cooperation with KSB should enable a more sustainable development of the prototypical projects created during the hackathon and thus expand the cultural institutions' offerings in terms of open and freely accessible cultural data.
