For the coordination of the activities within the national center of excellence for high-performance computing (NHR) at the Zuse Institute, we are looking for a candidate as 

HPC / NHR Service Center Manager (m/w/d)

as soon as possible, initially limited in time until 31.12.2025 with the option of a permanent appointment. 

The Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) is an interdisciplinary research institute for applied mathematics and data- intensive high-performance computing. Its research focuses on modeling, simulation, and optimization with scientific cooperation partners from academia and industry. Since January 2021, the ZIB has been extending its scientific services by offering HPC consulting for scientists in Germany and international projects as part of the nationwide HPC initiative “NHR” (Nationales Hochleistungsrechnen – NHR). We operate compute and storage resources at a top level. Our HPC system “Lise”, with its 8 PFLOP/s peak performance, 120,000 CPU cores, 500 TB memory, and 8 PB persistent online storage, helps scientists to perform demanding simulation and data analysis workflows to solve complex scientific questions. An extension of the system with powerful GPU nodes is in preparation. 

Your responsibilities: 

  • Technical-organizational management of the NHR Research Service Unit and their representation in the NHR community. 
  • Further development of NHR services taking into account the evolving user requirements. 
  • Active participation in the procurement process of next-generation HPC systems including coordination of their integration into the local IT and cooling infrastructure, and the energy supply. 

Requirements: 

  • Proven experience in the operation and procurement of HPC systems, 
  • Good knowledge of state-of-the-art parallel computer architectures (heterogeneous processor and storage systems, HPC interconnects), 
  • Good knowledge of modern concepts and tools for system-related software management (lifecycle management systems, orchestration systems) on Linux/Unix, 
  • Experience in personnel management, desirably several years of experience, 
  • Business fluent knowledge of the German and English language.
