The Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) celebrated its 40th anniversary with a ceremony on 13 September 2024. Numerous personalities from science and politics attended the ceremony, including Berlin’s Senator for Higher Education and Research Dr. Ina Czyborra.

The theme of the ceremony was ‘Future in Berlin’ with special attention to the role of the ZIB in Berlin’s research landscape and research on artificial intelligence (AI). The speeches were given by Senator Dr. Ina Czyborra and spokesperson of Berlin University Alliance and president of Freie Universität Berlin Professor Günter M. Ziegler, former president of the ZIB and Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences Professor Martin Grötschel, and professor of AI at LMU Munich Gitta Kutyniok.

The institute, which is located on Freie Universität Berlin’s natural sciences campus, works in close cooperation with the university in the field of artificial intelligence and participates in joint projects such as the MATH+ Cluster of Excellence, collaborative research centers, and various projects at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The ZIB also operates one of the German National High-Performance Computing Alliance (Nationaler Verbund für Hochleistungsrechnen) supercomputers on behalf of the Berlin University Alliance.

For over forty years the ZIB has carried out world-class research in applied mathematics and data-intensive high-performance computing. Its overarching goal is to enrich and improve life in all areas of society by producing knowledge and developing technologies that are based on innovative research – whether that is artificial intelligence, energy efficiency, sustainable transportation systems, or revolutionary medical technology.
