Visualisierung spielt eine wichtige Rolle bei der Verständnis- und Wissensgewinnung auf Grundlage von empirischen Daten. In der ersten Phase hilft Visualisierung, die Daten interaktiv zu analysieren, einen Überblick über diese zu erhalten und sinnvolle Hypothesen zu formulieren; in darauffolgenden Phasen hilft sie, teilautomatisierte Analysen zu kontrollieren und zu steuern; in der Endphase, wo Verfahren für eine voll automatisierte Datenanalyse zur Verfügung stehen, ermöglicht sie Zusammenfassungen von Ergebnissen, in einer Weise, die das Verständnis fördert. Visualisierung unterstützt auch maßgeblich Entwurfsprozesse, sei es bei der Entwicklung von pharmazeutisch aktiven Substanzen, beim Design von Geräten, oder bei der Planung klinischer Therapien.

Die Abteilung für visuelle Datenanalyse entwickelt Werkzeuge zur Gewinnung relevanter Informationen aus Datensätzen wie Zeitreihen, räumlich-zeitlichen Daten und hochdimensionalen Daten. Die Daten können aus Beobachtungen oder Simulationen stammen, sie können einzelne oder mehrere Zeit- und Längenskalen überdecken, sie können scharf oder unscharf sein, und sie können vollständig oder lückenhaft sein. Wir interessieren uns für anwendungsrelevante, in den Daten verborgene Strukturen: um diese zu enthüllen, entwickeln wir Methoden zur Identifizierung, Extraktion, Klassifizierung, Quantifizierung und Visualisierung. Nur in einfachen Fällen haben die Strukturen rein mathematischen Charakter; typischerweise erfordert ihre Modellierung Domänenwissen und die Berücksichtigung spezifischer Dateneigenschaften und Analysefragen.

Deshalb sind alle unsere Forschungsprojekte in Anwendungen eingebettet. Wir arbeiten an Problemen in Biologie, Biophysik, Neurowissenschaften, Medizin, Materialwissenschaft, Strömungsmechanik, Meteorologie und Klimaforschung. Darüber hinaus entwickeln wir Lösungen für die simulationsbasierte Therapieplanung, um die individualisierte Medizin voranzutreiben.

Zur Entwicklung praktisch nützlicher Analysesysteme entwickeln, adaptieren und kombinieren wir Methoden der Datenanalyse, Bildanalyse, Geometrieverarbeitung, Computergrafik, Datenvisualisierung, des maschinellen Lernens und der Mensch-Computer-Interaktion.

Die Softwarelösungen sind interaktiv, halb- oder vollautomatisch, abhängig von Faktoren wie Komplexität der Analyseaufgaben, erreichbarem Automatisierungsgrad und der Größe der zu analysierenden Datensätze. Der flexible Ansatz ermöglicht es uns, auch komplexe Aufgaben zu lösen, die sich nicht vollständig automatisieren lassen und die den Menschen “im loop" benötigen.

Die entwickelte Forschungssoftware wird Anwendungspartnern zur Verfügung gestellt, mit denen wir in enger Zusammenarbeit die Analyseaufgaben präzisieren, die Qualität der algorithmischen Lösungen bewerten und verbessern. Reife Lösungen werden an Industriepartner übertragen, die diese in Produkte einfließen lassen und vertreiben.
